Personal Essay Topic

At first I did not know what I wanted to choose as my writing topic, but I finally decided to write about a room from my childhood. I felt like I could expand and write a well developed essay on a room that has so many memories from my childhood till now. When we did the activity in class, I was able to describe the room very well and it brought back some old memories with my family.

The room that I chose was the playroom at my grandparents house in Stamford, Texas. Our family tries to go out to west Texas as much as we can because it is so relaxing out there and fun to get out of the big city. The playroom has changed a little over the years as my sister and I get older. When we were young I remember I had a bunch of toy trucks and cars while my sister had all of her dolls and doll houses. Now that we are older we have a billiards table and a Ping-Pong table instead of all our toys. Our grandparents also put in some new carpet because I guess my sister and I were a little messy when we were young. However, there are still some things that remained the same over the years like there still is a TV with a cuckoo clock above it that cuckoo’s every hour. There also is still a little table we can sit at, a desk, and closets full of all our old board games.

I chose my grandparents playroom to write about because my sister and I have had a lot of great memories in the playroom. I still love going out to west Texas today and one of the first places I go when I get out there is to the playroom. The playroom has changed a little, but it still has a loving feel to it and memories I will always remember.

It sounds like a great topic to chose. Are there any specific events/stories that you remember? Any funny incidents that happened that stand out in your mind?

Your topic sounds like it is going to be fun. There are a few questions you could ask yourself to help your paper become more personal. What made you choose the topic, and why do you think it is so important to you? Also, how have these memories made you who you are today?

This sounds like a great topic. As your classmates have already suggested, digging deeper into the topic through additional questions will help to bring more meaning into the memories/experience. Looking forward to reading your draft on Friday!
